4 out of 5 stars Nightwish - Metal Meets Opera   November 7, 2007
Over the past 5 years of so, Nightwish have become one of the biggest gothic, progressive metal bands in the world. Their mix of heavy guitars with almost operatic female vocals has become the blueprint that many similar bands have followed. This album would prove to be the last for original vocalist Tarja Turunen. Shortly after the release of this album and tour, she was uncerimonislly sacked by her bandmates. It will be interesting to see how the band carries on without the voice who many consider the heart and soul of the band. This is the only Nightwish album that I own, so I do not have anything to compare it to, but I think this one is very good. The guys are progressive metal at its most bombastic. They remind me a lot of Stradivarius only with a female singer. Lots of operatic elements, big choruses, choirs, big keyboards, you name it they throw it into the mix. Instrumentally the band is very good, although you won't find a ton of guitar solos here like you do in much music of this ilk. Nightwish has become Finland's biggest musical export. They are much bigger in the rest of the world than here in the U.S. but their fan base is growing here. If you like over the top progressive, Goth, operatic metal, this one is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Nightwish Symphonic Metal   August 7, 2007

Once This is my favorite album by Nightwish. Excellent music by Finland's symphonic metal band, Nightwish. Living in the U.S. we are not exposed to many of Europe's best artists and musicians. Don't miss this band. You will love them. Even if you are not a heavy metal fan, you will love this music, because it is symphonic metal. That means it's way more than metal guitars, drums and screaming vocals. Tarja, the female singer, is a trained opera singer. Toumas, the keyboardist, is a musical genius. Toumas writes the music. The bass guitarist, Marco, has what's called a "raucous" voice, but he is outstanding, and also helps compose some of the music. The lead guitarist, Empu is not only extremely talented, he's gorgeous! The drummer is the best I've ever heard! Check out Nightwish!! You will love them. They're touring the US in the Fall. Look for their new album in September.

5 out of 5 stars Whoaaa....now THIS is music!   May 30, 2007

WOW!! Pretty much sums it up. I can't get enough of these guys. I'd been hearing about Nightwish for the last couple of years, and now I understand the buzz.

They've created a sound all their own, blending classical, keyboard-based composition, crunchy guitars, and a truly gorgeous operatic female voice into a very heady brew. Some people have said the combination doesn't work. To each his own. For me, it works amazingly well. The talent is topnotch.

Two songs I especially love: Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan - - simply enchanting. Sung in Finnish by the amazing Tarja (now departed from the band to pursue opera in Germany, I heard), it's like nothing I've ever heard before. Dark Chest of Wonders - - can't stop singing or humming it. Impossibly catchy.

This band has it ALL: class, style, musicianship, songs, stunning vocals, and, for those who appreciate a bit of eye candy on the live stage (I do, and won't apologize for it) - - that celebrated beauty which denizens of the cold Viking north seem so effortlessly blessed with. I'm excited about the debut of their new singer, this current tour stateside. Following on the heels of a voice like Tarja's, she's got her work cut out for her. I wish her all the best!!

Somethin' for everybody, here. I warn ya, this music will grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic !   May 24, 2007
It's an amazing sound. The 2 bonus tracks is so cool, the videoclip (Wish I had an angel) is very good too. Is impressive the power and the smoothness of their music. Highly recommended !
