Amazon.com For their fifth album, Saturdays = Youth, France's M83 conjures up the 1980s in all their candy-colored glory. Even the cover portrait, showcasing models in rolled-sleeve blazers, peg-leg pants, and pastel prom dresses, evokes John Hughes' high-school classics Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club. In the liner notes, singer/multi-instrumentalist Anthony Gonzalez thanks the individuals who "made my teenager years so great!" and in "Graveyard Girl," he name-checks Molly Ringwald (he also takes a page from the Air playbook with allusions to stars, rockets, and other notebook-doodle favorites). There's a difference, however, between poaching from the past and recreating it. Despite the abundance of pretty-boy (and girl) vocals, oceanic keyboards, and big electronic beats--recalling '80s icons from Simple Minds to Kate Bush--Saturdays feels more like an affectionate tribute than a cynical carbon copy. Like the couple at the heart of "Kim and Jessie," Gonzalez is "crazy about romance and illusions," but all is not sweetness and light as a few numbers betray a Tim Burton-style Goth influence, which helps to alleviate any potential sugar shock. Saturdays = Youth is a precious gift from a secret admirer, wrapped in ambience and sealed with a blood-red kiss. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Like roasting a marshmallow July 1, 2009 This album is like roasting a marshmallow. Some tracks(We Own the Sky, Kim & Jesse) are a perfect golden brown and delicious. Others(You, Appearing; Couleurs) are a little burnt, but still good. Thens there's the tracks(Midnight Souls Still Remain, Skin of the Night) you never get to enjoy because it rains and your camp fire goes out before you have a chance to roast your tasty treat. A little less atmosphere in some tracks would have been nice. I don't want 4 1/2 minutes of electro-lush before the song starts. But, overall, a very decent record.
Proof That New Wave Is Still Innovative In It's Sound June 23, 2009 I checked this album out thanks to some website recommendations relating to new wave. I'm glad I did.
From the opening track, "You, Appearing" to the last (though kinda repetitive) track, "Midnight Souls Still Remain", this album immerses you into a wonderful world of sounds and voices all but forgotten by today's standards.
However, that does in no way mean that today's common musical standards are better. This album is a giant reminder that something went quite wrong in the mainstream. Nearly every song leaves a unique aftertaste in the mind. Some more uplifting ("Kim and Jessie"), some more thought provoking ("Too Late"). Each track seems to spark a feeling of inner brilliance from one's self.
If you are looking for something that reaches more deeply than billboard hits you won't be listening to in two months, take a look at this album. For the best reaction, pop it in on a Saturday night when you have some time to yourself. You'll know exactly what I've been explaining.
Can't Stop Listening to This One February 9, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wasn't even trying to get into new music this year, but this jumped out at me from a Pitchfork review. After playing it all the way through twice, my girlfriend and I were hooked; our friends have beent the same way. If you like a little mellow, 80's style pop, you can't go wrong with M83. Amazing live show as well. Left Thanksgiving dinner early to see 'em and weren't disappointed.
Best album of 2008 January 15, 2009 This is really a fantastic album. It is a little bizarre and slightly outside of the mainstream with it's '80s throwbacks and French electronic stylings, but the songs are wonderful and the whole album is good. The other review is right, this isn't a two- or three-song album, it's an entire work that is really distinctive and very, very fun. I heard it in a coffee shop this summer and asked the barista what it was, his eyes lit up and he was like "M83!" and I've been playing it basically ever since. Easily worth $8.
A bittersweet work. December 2, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am late in reviewing this, I purchased the day of it's release. It was one of those albums that I had to put away for a while. I didn't put it away because it wasn't good, but because it struck a fragile chord with me. From the moment You Appearing started, my mood completely changed. This album is beautiful and bittersweet, just like those great memories that it does so well at conjuring. For me, there is always a bit of sad longing in the memories of my best times. That feeling mixed with M83's ability to always present moving pieces of music make this album very powerful to me. This is an album of past summers, limitless hopes, growing up, and the highs and lows that come with those life experiences. It's hopeful and tragic all at the same time. To me it's very deep and presents many layers of beautiful music and emotion. I recommend this album to anyone looking for something deeper than your average release.
