Not my favorite January 19, 2001 12 out of 22 found this review helpful
I'm pretty new to jazz, so I try to write these reviews for the uninitiated versus the enthusiast. My thought being, if you know jazz, then you don't need me or anyone else here to tell you something you already know. One of the things I hear over and over from my friends who are still in the dark about jazz is that they are put off by the randomness and raucous nature of the music. Yet when I turn them on to recordings that are more deliberate and melodic, they respond favorably. My friend called me the other night after listening to "Sketches Of Spain" and was ecstatic. In fact he said, "It was great, I loved it. It's not like that squawking you have on in the background which is what most jazz sounds like to me." What he heard in the background was "JuJu." And I agreed with him. To my untrained ears, it sounds a little jarring and chaotic as well. Yes, this recording is considered a classic by many, but if you're looking for something a little more listenable, you might want to look elsewhere. Shorter's "Speak No Evil" works better for me, but still doesn't do it for me like, say, Coltrane's "Blue Train" or Adderley's "Somethin' Else." To be fair, I'll listen to this a few more times to see if I warm up to it.
Timeless music. July 29, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is such a classic in so many ways. If I were a musician, perhaps I'd better convey the power of this recording, but alas, ... Just buy it-you won't be sorry.
Better than Speak No Evil, this is Wayne's best July 2, 2000 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This album pairs Wayne with Coltrane's early sixties rhythm section and it is uniformly excellent. Wayne's soloing is intelligent, interesting and superbly logical. Jones, Tyner and Workman are excellent, as always. Tyner is in especially good form and plays a number of fine solos. It is quite different than their playing with Trane. A lot less intense and lot more joyful. The new re-master is pretty good but Wayne's sax sounds a little buzzy on some of the tracks. If you like Wayne then you should definitely get this.
Wayne Shorter never quites June 29, 2000 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Wayne Shorter just might be my favorite hard bop sax player. he delves into the avant garde without remorse, yet he keeps his roots close by his side. Juju is an amazing record. It has Shorter on Saxophone, McCoy Tyner (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) from the classic Coltrane Quartet, and Richard Davis (another Coltrane alum) on bass. it swings. it provokes thought. and best of all it is beautiful music.

This album is often frowned upon by jazz listeners who tend to find it too edgy and "different", but it has had a special place in the hearts of jazz musicians for years. It represents Shorter's finest compositional efforts, plus some of his most brilliant soloing.
