Hit and Miss November 13, 2003 I was quite anticipating this release from Vertical Horizon especially after I heard the brilliant new single "I'm Still Here" and also because I absolutely loved their last album, "Everything You Want". The album starts off quite strongly with an obvious future single, "When You Cry", followed by the first single, "I'm Still Here". "Forever" and "Goodbye Again" are equally as strong and are most likely future singles too. Up to now, these songs are as good as anything you would have found on "Everything You Want", even though you may be thinking that you've already heard songs like these before. And then things start to crumble as the album progresses. After repeated listens of "Go", I've noticed that this album is split into two main parts -- the first part, consisting of strong, melodic, single-worthy tracks and the other part, a bunch of drab, uninspiring fillers. The latter half of the album doesn't contain an entirely strong set of profound, catchy or original songs. If you preview the first few tracks on this album, you could easily be misled into thinking that the rest of the album is as great as the opening tracks. There are also a few harder rocking tracks on this album, namely "Sunshine", which is reminiscent of "We Are" from the last album. However, I question why they included this song on the album, as it doesn't seem to fit in with these bunch of songs. Given that VH had around 4 years to work on "Go", the quality of this album is only mediocre.
Not their best album but will suffice November 12, 2003 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love Vertical Horizon and I have all their albums. This isn't their best effort but all their albums are decent; kind of like Toad The Wet Sprocket; they've never released a bad album. Spend the money on another worthy effort from Vertical Horizon.
Good, but too formulaic November 9, 2003 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Everything you want was amazing. Then they framed every song on this album for hit radio. It's great listening, but low on the imagination. It'll probably have radio play which is what they're after. It' a slight disappointment for me, but they'll probably try something new on their next outing. The drummer added a lot of flavor to this record though. He even threw in a china cymbal to good effect.
Excellent November 9, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've been a fan of these guys since I heard them ten years ago in NC. Go is much better than Everything You Want. If you are a fan of the older pre-Everthing stuff, you will love this album.
Good, but..... November 8, 2003 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
To preface, I own all of their CDs and have been known to annoy my wife into nearly leaving me for wanting to listen to VH more than she does....Enjoyed the album and probably have lost some hearing due to excessive loud playing of this CD. The only problem I have might be that the songs are starting to become more homogeneous due to MS doing all of the song-writing now. [acoustic lead in to heavy guitars on several songs]. He's also clearly mastered the rock formula of shorter phrasing and rhymes galore, which has made their tunes much more friendly to radio-play than their older, more eclectic stuff (which I enjoyed...). I do, however, think that some of the lyrics felt more forced than in EYW, which is the better album of the two. All-in-all a solid CD, but after several years without an album, I was hoping for a bit more...
