Amazon.com Almost concurrent with the attempted credibility boost of Rod Stewart's When We Were the New Boys comes Mick Hucknall's nod to roots as diverse as Neil Young and reggae crooner Gregory Isaacs, along with a fistful of originals, on the sixth Simply Red album. Blue is the lifestyle music Hucknall was born to make, but given such high-flown material, it's hardly the embarrassment it might have been. Certainly, a recasting of Young's "Mellow My Mind" as boudoir fodder is more convincing than past missteps like the group's massacre of "If You Don't Know Me By Now." He should probably leave Aretha Franklin's catalog alone, though. --Rickey Wright

incredible October 15, 2008 SIMPLY RED FANS, "BLUE" CD. IS ONE OF THE MOST PROFOUND OF ALL THE SIMPLY RED'S MUSIC. I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED IT BACK IN THE DAY. I HAVE MOST OF ALL SIMPLY RED'S MUSIC. WE NEED TO HAVE MICK HUCKNALL TO VISIT THE US FOR A TOUR, NOT JUST LA.CALIF. IN 3-13-09. THINK OF US IN THE EAST COAST. "BLUE" IS A MUST IN YOUR COLLECTION OF SIMPY RED. I LOVE IT! SINCERELY YOURS, KATHY BERRY, VIRGINIA BEACH, VA.
One Of The best And Most Overlooked May 18, 2007 I have to disagree with most of the other reviewers, this is a good album. I love it as much as any of the other. This one is very blue and mellow, sad and beautiful...all the things that make me a fan of Simply Red.
easy does it December 16, 2006 A pair of South African friends with impeccable musical taste implored me to buy this CD, alleging that my life would be impoverished without it.
I'm not convinced.
No doubt Mick Hucknall has a certain appeal. He's got a tuneful, bluesy voice, though not one that would get him a notch on anyone's Blues Fireplace. He can be occasionally soulful. The Simply Red sound has at times been memorable.
Yet BLUE ultimately falls into the 'easy listening' rather than 'great music' category. That's not a bad thing and might well be considered a compliment when written of most performers.
With apologies to those who believe no artist should have another go at a signature performance of a given piece, Hucknall's 'The Air That I Breathe' is arguably a high point of the album, up there with the very fine 'Someday in My Life'. 'Say You Love Me' represents the CD's best writing, words and music penned by Hucknall himself.
Yet BLUE is not blues enough, and there is little here that is Simply Red as we remember that sound best.
Still Is A Major Force December 31, 2005 I am partial to Mick Hucknall so I have to say that I may not be as critical as I should be, but I love this CD. The summer that it came out, I played the heck out of it. If for nothing else, the Neil Young tune, Mellow My Mind, is worth the price of the CD. I dislike the hideous cover of "Air That I Breath", but some liked it. If you play this one enough you can't help but get with it.

I truly enjoy this CD, the first one I bought from Simply Red. When I heard 'The Air That I Breathe' on the radio I bought it on a lark. What a lucky gem I found. This CD is great to listen to on a relaxing drive... It is a short CD however, could have maybe added a few songs. But otherwise, it's some cool, mellow music to chill out too. Enjoy!
