4 out of 5 stars "I'M SCARED OF LOVIN YOU"   June 25, 2009
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

When I first heard Jazmine Sullivan, I thought here goes another Missy Elliott protege who is here for a quick fix and gone before you can remember her name. Its not that Tweet, Nicole Wray and Ms.Jade weren't talented, they just didn't have the staying power to last. Jazmine Sullivan is attempting to break that curse. She already has 3 top-10 singles, a gold album and a tour with Musiq and Anthony Hamilton. That's a big accomplishment for a rookie.

Jazmine Sullivan has an "old soul" way ahead of her 22 years of age. She has excellent vocal range and a beautiful tone reminiscent of a young Aretha Franklin. The vibe of this album is definitely geared towards women. Maybe because I'm a man, I just don't understand why a woman would want to "Bust Your Windows". But somehow Jazmine makes both men and women groove to the infectious beat. Women singing the song cause of the revenge side and men grooving cause they aint listening to the words and just going along with the beat. "Need U Bad", is the first single. It features Missy Elliott and a reggae-type beat. At first I thought "Lions, Tigers & Bears", was corny as hell. But it slowly grew on me because of the lyrics. She impresses me most with the ballad "In Love With Another Man". Her hazy voice glides through this song with so much emotion. She even pulls out a high note to close the song. I wish she had more songs like that. Unfortunately, the other ballad "After The Hurricane", isn't as good. And she shows her age on "Switch" and "Dream Big". To me it was her attempt at amusing the younger audience who can't relate to her tales of heartbreak and revenge. I had hoped her remake of Beyonce's "Resentment" would make the album. But it was left off. It should also be noted that Jazmine wrote or co-wrote all of the album with great production from Salaam Remi.

What is it with female R & B singers making songs about hurting their man these days. Why now are they having an epiphany about kicking their man to the left and busting their window? I love their music. Even when I probably shouldn't. Jazmine Sullivan continues this trend. She is very talented and should continue to grow. And put the baseball bats down.

5 out of 5 stars JAZMINE SULLIVAN IS FEARLESS   June 22, 2009
She deserves a Grammy award. Her writing is mature,
refreshing and soulful. Her songs appeal to the old and the
young and in-between (like me).

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Rebirth for Female R&B artists w/ the potential for staying power   June 22, 2009
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I think Jazmine Sullivan is a fantastic breath of fresh air for those of us who are hankering for young female R&B artists who don't feel the need to be half naked to sell an album. Her voice is beautiful, the first album is a solid stepping stone for breaking into the industry as the CD as a whole is strong. As she develops as an artist she will become stronger and stronger. As a side note, this CD is really funny to me because she's just so damn HONEST! And that's what appeals to me. Come on, don't get high and mighty like you never busted a dude's windows (or thought about it) or wanted his best friend instead of him? LOL, she's just being real. Keep at it, Ms. Sullivan. I see you doing big things. :-)

4 out of 5 stars Jazmine steps onto the R&B scene with her oustanding debut. B-   June 15, 2009
ONE: BUST YOUR WINDOWS - This song is good but it's overplayed by now. But for some reason I don't really get sick of it. One of the better vocal works on the album. B

TWO: NEED U BAD - Her first single. Whoever that is in the beginning and the end, I love the accent! About wanting your man (or woman) and needing them bad. Again, sure you've heard it already. B-

THREE: MY FOOLISH HEART - Soulful vocals as usual. An old-school-sounding sample rides through as the lyrics of a relationship going bad ensues. Addicting beat. Must be put on repeat. B-

FOUR: LIONS, TIGERS & BEARS - Contender for best lyrics on the album. Replay-ability is super high strangely. Nice orchestration. B

FIVE: CALL ME GUILTY - About domestic violence. Catchy chorus. One of the songs that feels enhanced when you are walking with you iPod/mp3 player. Underrated vocals but almost feels like too much information. C+

SIX: ONE NIGHT STAND - Fun, fun, fun. Not only is Jazmine young, but she's an Aries. And if you know anything about them it's that they are youthful, and can sometimes have a short attention span (hence the one night stands and loss of interest). Not surprised there. I'm not the type to do that type of thing too often, and so far have never done it but I still find this song fun and easy to put on the repeat button. I'm a Taurus and I happen to have my faults also. B-

SEVEN: AFTER THE HURRICANE - Stargate's beat sounds like so many typical R&B beats out there, with the back beat that I really can't stand. It's not a bad track, but it just doesn't hold its own as well (against the others). She also repeats the chorus too much at the end. B-

EIGHT: DREAM BIG - This is another fun track. Some won't be feeling it, but I'm one that does. It's an inspirational mid tempo about doing big things and following your dreams. Samples Daft Punk's "Veridis Quo". Don't ask me to pronounce that! B

NINE: LIVE A LIE - Very, very interesting use of sample. I think the lyrics that are decent but only show promise, the great beats and the vocals of this album carry her through like some other R&B wannabe divas could only envy. This album is 3x as good as Beyonce's dud of an album, Sasha Fierce. I can't even play that one straight through. Anyway, the only problem I have with this song is that the excellent verses are interjected by the wobbly chorus. B-

TEN: FEAR - Another one that once I discovered it, it was seriously on repeat over and over. The beat is probably the best on the album. Talks about Miss Sulivan's fears about life and things that we can all relate to on one level or another. Amazing track and probably her best. A-

ELEVEN: IN LOVE WITH ANOTHER MAN - A slow groove, with nice lyrics and a great vocal performance. Amazing high note at the end that I can perform too (just not as fantastic (her voice is better)). Good from start to finish. B+

TWELVE: SWITCH! - The last fun track. Very upbeat and funny but just real and telling it like it is. I really find something charming in Jazmine's lyrics. I don't find them juvenile at all. I just feel that this all is an experience that a young lady like herself has been through and she's just sharing her story. B-

THIRTEEN: BEST OF ME (iTUNES BONUS TRACK) - Downloaded this track recently. It's not bad. In fact, I think that it would have fit fine on the final album (but maybe they didn't think it was good enough). It's another track that the ladies could relate too. Even some guys can vibe to it. It's about someone you just can't let go because they do you so good but they might not be the best for you. B-

All in all, this album is just short of amazing. In fact, by today's standards it's just that! The filler is kept to a minimum and the beats are R&B, Soul and Hip-Hop lite goodness. If this all sounds inviting and you haven't picked up the album yet, then why are you still reading this and contemplating?

5 out of 5 stars Very refreshing and fun!!!   June 14, 2009

When I heard Jazmine's first single, "Need you bad", I was very curious about her music. That song had the reggae flavor that I loved and it was very authentic. Then I heard"Bust your windows" and I knew I had to cop the album. I was not disappointed. Her voice is beautiful and expressive. Sass and soul is evident in everything she sings. Besides Bust your windows and Need U Bad, check out After the Hurricane, One Night Stand, Dream Big, Lions, Tigers, & Bears...and In Love with another man. I TOLD U IT WAS GOOD...THAT IS 7 SONGS ON ONE ALBUM. PURE FIRE!!! I love After the Hurricane, very pretty slow jam. It is so difficult to get a good album these days. This album rocks. Only cameo is Missy which is great. No rappers to mess anything up. If you are an R&B fan, with a splash of Do Wop, Reggae, and old fashioned soul, you will love this album.
