| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com D'Angelo is obviously inspired by the progressive soul of the early '70s, but he has also borrowed carefully from the hip-hop of his own generation. Like many of his contemporaries, he has recorded a tribute to marijuana--the album's title--but it's far wittier than most. It takes the form of a conventional love song ("Brown sugar babe, I gets high off your love ... that's why my eyes are a shade blood burgundy") and mimics intoxication in its throbbing bass lines and reverb-heavy organ. Another song, with a title too profane to print, is a blunt tale of infidelity and murder, but in contrast to most rap fantasies, D'Angelo's blues-like narrative acknowledges such acts have serious consequences. Best of all is the Prince-like "Higher," which combines the spiritual love of God and the carnal love of a woman into one dizzying, organ-fueled hymn. D'Angelo is still rather clumsy with lyrics, and he leans too heavily on ballads over dance numbers, but he has enough talent to grow in any of several directions. It will be an exciting story to follow and one would be foolish to miss the first chapter. --Geoffrey Himes

peerless... March 19, 2009 this artist goes way beyond almost anyone out there with this album, in his mastery of voice, keyboard, songwriting, and in his ability to connect stylistically with the past while creating something entirely new and fresh.
i'm a hypercritical classical musician, so when someone gets my endorsement, i really mean it. along with lauryn hill's miseducation, brown sugar is pure genius, a timeless classic, essential listening.
i hope and pray that mr. archer gets everything he needs to live well and create more wonderful musc. i know there are so many who are eagerly waiting.
Brown Sugar November 17, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
D' Angelo's Brown Sugar cd came out back in the late 90's so,I don't know why Amazon is telling me that they want me to rate this joint. Anyway, from what I remember, it was a good cd. I think it had that some "Untitled" where he was naked on the video and all the women were going crazy over that joint. Anyway, it was cool and if you are a fan of D'Angelo then pick it up but in my opinion, unless you had the cd and you just want to pick it up again I would pass on it. It ain't all that in 2008. NEOSOUL06.
this is a classic July 30, 2008 i like every song on this album. his voice just mellows you out. everyone should have this one in their cd collection.
Instant Classic January 5, 2008 It's been 12 years since I purchased this album and I finally write my review! I'm J-RE, an R&B artist out now and I honestly have to break it down for you in a simple sentence. D'angelo was my only inspiration for even wanting to break into this crazy industry. I was 14 when brown suga dropped and all I could remember was how cool this dude was. I listened to this album and studied this album and wrote and played keys and really used this album as a blue print. I am grateful for this album and honestly is the only album that I really still listen to like that (Voodoo as well)
I don't need to write a crazy long review here. Just want to tell D'angelo thank you for exposing this to the world, cause without you, there would be no J-RE and that's real. Honestly if I hadn't listened to this album I would have not really cared to make music like this. I mean I was musically inclined since I was 8 but "Brown Suga" made me think..."Man this is the best music I've ever heard. I need to do this"
This album is a hands down classic
