Album Description Vinyl LP reissue of this 1973 album by Toots & The Maytals. It was their first album produced by Chris Blackwell (head of Island Records). The better known US version is a compilation of the original Funky Kingston and their second album, In the Dark. It is notable for the Maytals' biggest hit, "Pressure Drop", as well as unlikely cover songs, such as a Reggae version of John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads", which replaces the lyrical reference to West Virginia with West Jamaica. 10 tracks. Universal. 2009.
Amazon.com By 1975, rock audiences were finally getting heavily into reggae, thanks to the success of Bob Marley's first two albums and Jimmy Cliff's soundtrack for The Harder They Come. Funky Kingston, a collection of early '70s Maytals singles, was released to capitalize on the newfound demand for Jamaican sounds, and it did not disappoint--nor will it disappoint anyone who comes across it today. With Toots Hibbert's gritty vocals at the fore, this is the closest reggae ever got to American soul music. If sublimely funky tracks such as "Time Tough," "Got to Be There," and "Pressure Drop" don't make you smile, then their ganja-laced cover of John Denver's "Country Roads" (complete with a shout-out to "West Jamaica") should definitely do the trick. --Dan Epstein

It doesn't get any better February 29, 2008 I know this album by heart. It is certainly the best reggae recording that I've ever heard. The spirit of Toots shines through, and the combination of funk and West Indian understated rhythm is irresistible. My favourite dancing record.

Toots is the best, if you can see him live, do so. He may not be young but the man can dance. Toots should be given more credit for what he has done in reggea and ska.
Great Music, but this release is a rip-off March 13, 2002 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
Contrary to the Amazon editor's write-up, there WAS a proper album called "Funky Kingston." This ain't it, however. This stingy little collection brings together some of the tracks from the "Funky Kingston" album and some tracks from "In the Dark." For good measure, "Pressure Drop" is added in from "Monkey Man."The original "Funky Kingston" and "In the Dark" are probably Toots & the Maytals' best albums. They date loosely from around 1973 and 1974. I strongly recommend that you buy these albums in their original form and skip this release which will end up redundant in your collection. If you want a decent Toots & the Maytals sampler, spring for "Time Tough."

Toots deserves a place in your CD collection April 10, 2000 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This singles collection, though more than 25 years old, still sounds fresh today - thanks to the earthy, organic arrangements and Toots' soulful voice. Songs like "Time Tough" and "Pomp and Pride" will give you a sample of Toots' very peculiar approach to reggae, and the raspy character of his voice, together with a a tight though unobstructive backing band makes this CD a very enjoyable experience.
