Amazon.com essential recording Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim Emerson

25 Years Old, As Good As Ever June 15, 2009 Another review of this landmark album is certainly not necessary but I figured on occasion of it's 25th anniversary that I'd write one anyway. When this came out I was 7 years old. Seven! I didn't know what "masturbating in a magazine" meant. Who cared! The music was incredible. It was all we heard on the radio, we also had the cassette tape and we played it incessantly on hot 1984 summer's days in my Mom's Datsun. I still remember listening to "When Doves Cry" and the smell of the leather seats on hot days. We continued to hear it certainly into 1985 and the album really has never left me. It's one of those ones you can't imagine life without and one you can't leave out of your childhood memories. Simply put I was listening to this when I was 7, 17, 27 and I'll be listening to it forever.
Music from the Motion Picture "Purple Rain" June 13, 2009 Fast service. Like new CD. Plays like new.
Thank You
One of my favorite albums of all times... May 24, 2009 I know these reviews are for the items not Amazon service, but I just wanted to include how satisfied I am with the MP3 downloads and services. That said, Purple Rain is, in my opinion, Prince's greatest album. It isn't often that a fan can love ALL the songs on one album..a mix of songs from many albums, yes..but not every song. I grew up in the 80's and Purple Rain just reminds me of all that I loved from that time. The movie, Purple Rain, was okay, but I think the songs were the best part. Prince is a great artist and songwriter..I love how he mixes funk, dance and rock.
Kinda Purple May 12, 2009 I happened to catch "Purple Rain," the movie, on TV a week or two ago and was immediately appreciative of and in love with Prince all over again. I have alot of his music already, but I purchased the soundtrack because I wanted "Darlin' Nikki" specifically. Nostalgia settling in and loving every minute!
ONE OF MY TOP 50 ALBUMS March 20, 2009 This is a classic album that features the classic songs Purple Rain , When doves cry and Lets go crazy and more classics , the film may not be great but the album is awesome. Highly recommended.
