Colourful 1987 show July 8, 2008 If you've seen my review of this bands Recital of the Script live video you'll know I pointed out a range of issues. And thankfully a number of them have been addressed here. Firstly, where the earlier live gig seemed to rely solely on Fish and the audience for any sort of feel or sense of performance there is an actual effort on the part of other band members to provide somewhat of a show. That is partly probably due to a greater wealth of experience in live performance and the larger stage area afforded the band at Loreley.
Another area where the earlier release fell down was the lack of any real contribution musically from anyone apart from the keyboardist. Yeah OK, that's an exaggeration but really, all you seemed to hear was these twee mincing, keyboard tones. But by this stage of their career Marillion had a larger palette from which to draw in terms of songs that seem to make a tiny bit more use of guitar and the mix is more generous to the rhythm section. So both musically and physically this seems a far more expansive piece of entertainment that Recital of the Script.
Issues with this release would be that quite simply soft as a dry tissue prog rock just isn't that entertaining. The more encompassing live experience that Marillion were able to sally forth with at this stage of their careers just seems sort of wasted when song after song is about as fired up as what you'd expect an Eagles unplugged special would sound like. Quite why this band is touted in the pages of Classic Rock magazine with such regularity is beyond me frankly unless the British press is just desperate to have a homegrown prog mob to talk about in order to avoid having to give column inches to all the kraut prog that was wafting around in the late 70's when Marillion were still in shorts.
For Marillion fans this is a very good release to pick up as while it's bereft of special features of significance it does allow you to replace that worn out VHS and EMI are to be congratulated for putting in a bit of value by bothering to remaster the audio to coincide with the release in order to spark things up a bit - at least they didn't just do a straight transfer.
A MAGICAL CONCERT IN A MAGICAL VENUE! February 11, 2008 There could not be a better venue than the Open Air Theater in Loreley, Germany for Marillion's Thieving Magpie Show. No elaborate stage or fancy laser light shows here. Just straight forward Progressive Rock music. Fish's love of theatrics are evident here as he dons the jester outfit made famous in SCRIPT FOR A JESTER'S TEAR and Rossini's "La Gazza Ladra" introduces the band to the crowd. The concert starts with an explosive rendition of Slainte Mhath. The band goes on to play many of the songs from their first four records with an intensity rarely seen. There is only one thing I regret about this DVD, and that is that, unfortunately, only half of MISPLACED CHILDHOOD is featured whereas in the THIEVING MAGPIE CD, all of MC is included. I wish that the DVD had followed suite as MC is really a continuous story and is best appreciated when listened to non-stop from beginning to end. I am sure footage of the entire thing still exists somewhere and that, one day, the DVD will be redistributed with the full MC live footage as it should have been. That said, die-hard Fish-era Marillion fans like me will still love this DVD as it brings back the nostalgy of these days. Buy this DVD without reservations. You will not be disappointed!
CLASSIC MARILLION!!!! July 7, 2007 I was fortunate to see Marillion on the Clutching At Straws tour so watching this dvd for the first time was a blast from the past. The 5.1 sound mix and picture are both excellent and the band was on top of their game during this performance. The only thing that would make this release better is if they had interviews with the members talking about their memories of the performance and the tour. Particulary some thoughts from the singer at the time, Fish. That man is quite a character and hearing a few of his anecdotes would have rounded out this dvd nicely. Also, it would have been cool if they did all of Misplaced Childhood like they did on The Thieving Magpie (La Gazza Ladra).
one of a kind May 19, 2007 I attended this show in 1987 and I was truly blown away. They have never been more commercially succesful as with this tour. Eventhough purists might find the first two CDs much more enjoyble I highly recommend this dvd. The setting is beautiful and Fish and his buddies were truly at the their heights for this show. Script for a Jester's tear is still working - and Fugazi! By the way - the show had Magnum as an opener, check out their "On a storyteller's night" CD. Slainthe mhath!
