4 out of 5 stars We're here to make coffee metal   March 27, 2009
"We're here to make coffee metal, we will make everything metal, blacker than the blackest of blacks times infinite." Thus spake Nathan Explosion, frontman of fictitious metal band Dethklok from the animated Metalocalypse series. But it could of been Pyramaze as this is a deeply traditional metal album with modern production rendering all points crisp and clear and lyrically the concerns are very trad metal as well. Matt Barlows' vox are well suited to this sort of thing and his style does momentarily remind me of early Mark Boals or Jeff Scott Soto.

Most of the tracks are the brainchild of guitarist Michael Kammeyer but this isn't a shredfest as all is subjugated to the needs of song. A couple of tunes are a touch overlong and not all jump out at the listener but the solid drumming patterns of Marten Gade Sorenson and the guitars intertwine nicely to propel pretty much every track into the generically `good' category.

With trad metal artwork, fully lyrics and just enough variety squeezed into an admittedly tight framework Immortal is an album that should sit well with fans of trad metal acts such as Judas Priest and a raft of power metal pioneers like Helloween and Gamma Ray even if the Pyramaze sound is less hysterical vocally and not beholden to double time rhythm signatures.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST ICED EARTH ALBUMS EVER!!!!   January 13, 2009
Of course it's not an Iced Earth album, but it should be and it's far superior to some of the dry, lame stuff that Jon Schaeffer has been releasing lately whether it's with Ripper Owens or Matt Barlow.

This album by Pyramaze with Matt Barlow is melodic thrash done very well, offering keyboards with atmosphere. It's well produced and highly polished. Unfortunately for Jon Schaefer, he had nothing to do with it.

Matt Barlow is a superior vocalist and should consider PYRAMAZE full time.

Let me stop because I'm now going to share a piece of my mind with Jon Schaefer's recent flop. Look for my review of it.

5 out of 5 stars This is better than Iced Earth's latest album with Barlow   November 23, 2008
This is a fantastic album from start to finish. Barlows voice sounds fantastic and the music is flawless. I found it amazing that every song is great and I cant seem to get tired of replaying this CD over and over again. Barlows comeback with Iced Earth was disappointing but this Pyramaze album is a must have for any metal fan!

4 out of 5 stars Solid Effort   November 17, 2008
I've listened to this a only a few times. My initial impression is that it's good, but there aren't really any standout tracks that grab you on the first listen (or two). I compare it with something like BG's Twist in the Myth.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing   September 25, 2008

Perhaps it's my fault for setting my expectations too high, but this CD just didn't deliver what I was hoping for. I've been an Iced Earth fan for some time and was excited at the prospect of hearing Matt Barlow's comeback on this album. His singing is fine, the music itself is fine, but as a whole it never really accomplishes anything particularly memorable. The highlight of the whole CD is the intro. That's not usually a good sign.

Again, there's nothing bad here. There's just nothing that makes me want to stop what I'm doing and give that one another listen.
