Product Description Film, as well as video, often exhibits a greater sensitivity to what is to us invisible, ultraviolet light. This is most often outdoors, especially at high altitudes, where the UV-absorbing atmosphere is thinner; and over long distances, such as marine scenes. It can show up as a bluish color cast with color film, or it can cause a low-contrast haze that diminishes details, especially when viewing far-away objects, in either color or black-and-white. Ultraviolet filters absorb UV light generally without affecting light in the visible region. It is important to distinguish between UV-generated haze and that of air-borne particles, such as smog. The latter is made up of opaque matter that absorbs visible light as well as UV, and will not be appreciably removed by a UV filter. The UV Protector shields lens from dust, moisture, scratches, and breakage.
Amazon.com Product Description Protects lenses from dust, moisture, scratches, and other damage. These filters can be kept on the camera at all times.

No difference noticed when using this filter July 5, 2009 Generally speaking, you should probably only buy this filter if you're concerned about your glass getting scratched or damaged and would rather a cheap filter take the brunt of the abuse. Consider using a lens hood instead to add protection to your lens and reducing flare, or if you're worried that the filter will give you unwanted reflections.
does what it is supposed to July 5, 2009 for the price, and for a klutzy camera owner, it is perfect. Also, I have a pretty deep gouge on my main lens from BEFORE I bought this filter that causes some light flares when I shoot into bright light. It went away when I started using this filter.
does its intended job July 4, 2009 Purchased this item along with Sony Sal 70-400 lens, it fits perfectly. and it was delivered on schedule.
OK for Free July 1, 2009 For an inexpensive filter (free with the lens I bought) it is fine. lots of ghosting as you might expect for an uncoated filter. I have removed it and do not plan on using it again.
On my bigger glass I tend to use 77mm multi-coated filters which run in the ~$100+ range. I may purchase a 58mm coasted version of this filter for ~$40 (or about 10% of the cost of the lens I would be putting it on).
However, with the 50mm f1.4 I tend to shoot in low light with light sources in the frame. No filter will generally be my choice for these situations.
Tiifen 72mm UV Protection Filter June 29, 2009 Very nice filter. Ultra Sharp fits nicely no problems at all. I have to say it does a very nice job of deflecting sun rays which can leave awful reflections in pictures.
