John's new album is a triumph, with a sound that is at once timeless yet urgently rooted in this time and place. The lyrics recall a continuous conversation with America, a reminder of John's unmatched ability to resonate with people from all walks of life. With a voice that can cut glass and inspire generations, and a band that sounds like it came to tear the roadhouse down, 'Revival' is not just a great John Fogerty album -- and a great rock album -- it's an essential musical work by an artist without peer, that will certainly stand as one of the most compelling albums of 2007.

The self-referential title of Fogerty's first album in three years is no mere play on words; this is as close as he's gotten in a long while to duplicating the loose swamp blues, country, folk, soul and rock that he so memorably created a template for in Creedence Clearwater Revival. Thankfully the advertisement for downloaded ringtones in the disc's booklet is the only contemporary influence creeping into this stripped-down set of rootsy rockers and ballads. Fogerty's voice sounds great throughout; passionate, more committed and comfortable with these songs than he has seemed in years. His material has often leaned towards politics, especially as it concerns the working class, but seldom as directly as on the gutsy choogle of "Long Dark Night" and the rollicking "I Can?t Take it No More." He seems like a cranky dad on "It Ain't Right," railing about spoiled pop tarts in the spotlight, and "Summer of Love"'s look back at the titular time in the late '60s falls on the schlock side. But Fogerty charges into "Longshot" like the angry young man of "Fortunate Son," singing "I ain't got no 'ristocrats a-hangin' in my tree" with an assurance and intensity that reaches through the speakers and grabs the listener. Just like in the old days. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Albums Of The Year   June 30, 2009

I predicted that a lot of the one star reviews on here for John Fogerty's latest album, Revival, would be because people didn't want to hear his political views. Turns out I was right. That's a shame really. I guess I must be one of the lucky ones who can listen to Lynard Skynard as well as U2. That's one of the great things about music; people can use it to state their views. And for me it's still possible to enjoy music without necessarily agreeing with the artist's message.

And what about Revival? As my title states, I find it to be one of the best albums of the year. A variety of music, a little CCR sound, some intense and passionate singing, mixed with clever and sometimes angry lyrics gives this album real distinction over Fogerty's previous effort of Deja Vu, which was a pretty darn good album in it's own right. This one is his slam dunk.

And if there are any Cheap Trick fans reading this who are on the fence with Revival, consider this album to be Fogerty's "Rockford."

5 out of 5 stars John Fogerty Does a Fantastic Job   April 1, 2009
It is as if CCR has never left the building. His voice is wonderful to listen to, and he is clearly a great artist. If you, too, are a CCR fan, this CD is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars John Fogerty Rocks on   March 19, 2009
I was so happy to hear that wonderful voice that hasn't changed over the years. John can still rock with the best of them. To quote one of the songs "you can't go wrong if you play alittle bit of that Creedence song!!!!" Every track is enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Up to the Bandstand   February 16, 2009
John Fogerty's "Revival" finally found its way to my changer! Wow! It explodes with energy. Fogerty goes back to basics & sounds incredibly fresh and relevant. Irma Thomas recorded "River Is Waiting" on her Simply Grand CD. The track perched at #1 in my personal top ten this year. Four of John's tracks are my very favorites. The opener "Don't You Wish It Was True" has an infectious beat and spins a smile with its good time feeling, "An angel took my hand, said you don't have to hurry, got all the time in the world, don't worry." "Creedence Song" boogies to a swamp groove, "Daddy had a band, played him a little guitar, traveled in a band, living that rock & roll, night after night, people coming up to the bandstand saying you can't go wrong if you play a little bit of that Creedence Song." "Broken Down Cowboy" is a sweet slower song with Fogerty's classic vocals, half snarl, half heartache, "You never can trust your luck, he's bad news in a pickup truck." The under two-minute "It Ain't Right" bursts like old time Chuck Berry. There are no weak songs on the disc. While the minute-and-a-half political eruption "I Can't Take It No More" doesn't bother me, it's so brief that it flies by. "Revival" highlights John Fogerty at the top of his game. This is a must-have CD! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great album that deserved more radio play   January 28, 2009

I really like this music and the sound is very respectable as well. Instead of playing the same music over and over, the classic rock stations should have put this music in rotation.
