Album Description The City opens up in with the funky and sensuous "Cosmic Monkey" featuring Jeffrey Osbourne's slinky overdubbed harmonies. "Hello Again" is Wes Montgomery-breezy soul samba. Next up is "Side Steppin'"s high-spirited blast of '80s-era disco jazz. "The City"'s dreamy blend of Boney James' soulful tenor saxophone, shivery keyboards, boogaloo congas, bluesy guitar and cognac-smooth jazz vocal follows. "Las Vegas" is an exuberant congress of dancing guitar licks, Michael Paulo's throaty sax and a bouncing hip-hop swing beat. "Old Friends" is a quiet fire ballad caressed by Brown and James' tender interplay. "Winelight"'s blend of Brown's Grover Washington, Jr.-channeling solos and tasty club beats is complemented by the silky-smooth party starter "Jumpin' Uptown." "Food For the Moon"'s cool 'n funky hip-hop jazz groove flows into a faithful/playful voice box-juiced version of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Reel Mutha For Ya." Fittingly, the album closes with the sublime Brown/James chillout duet "The City (Instrumental)." The City proves beyond a doubt that Paul Brown is one of the most exciting and important guitarists in contemporary jazz.

Dry Martini August 9, 2008 I'm a big Paul Brown fan -- this is an interesting mix of music from Cosmic Monkey to Las Vegas to Hello Again. If you're new to Paul Brown then check out the "Up Front" CD first. But if you're a fan (even if it's just from hearing him on the radio)-- this is a good CD to add to your collection.

I absolutely loved the first song. The rest of the songs were nice. Not exactly my taste, but they were good enough to justify the purchase of the cd based on only one song.

After a very successful career as a producer of many great acts in the smooth jazz circuit, Paul Brown is building up a solid career as a smooth jazz artist himself. This new work proves one more time that Brown is one of the finest musicians around in the genre. "The City" offers an outstanding performance in most of the tracks. Grover Washington Jr's classic "Winelight" is such a great cover. A delicate and tasteful rendition that truly displays Paul Brown's musicianship at its best. Another track ("Las Vegas") reminds me of Brown's deep recognition to Wes Montgomery style. Mixing vocals in the album's title track with some funky grooves in "Motha for ya" also proves that he feels comfortable enough to explore different territories. The instrumental version of "The City" is a true gem and saxman Boney James is an added value to this great album. In short, this is a "must have" cd for any smooth jazz lover.
cool, sensual, sophisticated, and sexy September 5, 2006 Now THIS is what smooth jazz should be all about - a far cry from the oh so prevalent elevator variety. I bought Paul Brown' City album on a whim, based on the rave reviews right here, and it was a fabulous surprise. Sensual, original, and just the right kind of stuff you want to have playing in the background when you invite the object of your desire over for a date at your house.
