Editorial Reviews:

Description
In the mid 1960?s a wave of British rock groups crossed the Atlantic to rule the charts in America. Ranging from hard rock to bouncy pop, with catchy melodies and ringing guitars, the British Invasion changed the sound of rock and roll forever. Includes full song performances of Delta Lady/ Joe Cocker, You Really Got Me/ The Kinks, He Ain't Heavy/The Hollies, Heart Full of Soul/The Yardbirds, How Do You Do It?/Gerry and the Pacemakers, World Without Love/Peter and Gordon, Mighty Quinn/Manfred Mann, Salty Dog/Procol Harum, Wild Thing/Troggs, 40,000 Headmen/Traffic.

The opportunity to check out a handful of rarely seen, actual live performances by some fine British bands is the main appeal of The British Invasion, one of five discs included in the Rock n' Roll Goldmine boxed set. Hosted by Casey Kasem, who provides introductions and trivia, the 40?minute program contains live clips of the Kinks ("You Really Got Me"), Procol Harum ("A Salty Dog," with Robin Trower on guitar), and Traffic (the original Steve Winwood-Chris Wood-Jim Capaldi lineup does a rousing version of "40,000 Headmen") that are just about worth the price of admission by themselves. The pickings are slimmer elsewhere; additional clips, many of them lip-synced, range from curious (it's cool to see Jimmy Page as a member of the Yardbirds, but they're miming to the recording of "Heart Full of Soul," which featured Jeff Beck, not Page, on guitar) to lightweight (like Peter and Gordon's "World Without Love," written by Lennon & McCartney, or Gerry and the Pacemakers' "How Do You Do It," originally recorded but rejected by the Beatles) to merely laughable (the Troggs' "Wild Thing," a dumb classic and an even dumber "video"). --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars very rare film cllips is worth the price of this dvd.   October 1, 2008

this is one good dvd about the british invasion because it features rare never-before-seen film clips of very popular british groups of the 60's. i would recommend this for all those british invasion buffs because some of the film clips were performed live, others were lip-synched but still very nice to watch to reminisce days of the 60's. highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Video / Audio middling, Memories Priceless   August 15, 2008

As other reviewers have noted, some of these performances - and they are all full song - were lip-synched, others are live. But it is what there is, and how much video is there of the original Troggs, Procul Harum, Manfred Mann anyway? For the memories of a time when musicians spearheaded social change and represented something truly new and original, this is worth a few bucks! Original Kinks, Hollies, Yardbirds; hard to go too far wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage rock footage   November 21, 2004

I had seen some of these clips before, but still enjoyed the DVD. Only 40 minutes long though. The Pacemakers, Animals, and Kinks performances appeared to be performed live; others are obviously mimed. But it's always great to see Chas Chandler do that bass line in the Animals song.

4 out of 5 stars a fun ride!   May 23, 2004

Seeing the Troggs doing 'Wild Thing' in a subway station was the high point here for me. Very cool. The kids standing around in the 'audience' seem to not know quite what to think, and that just adds to the clip's charm. Adding choice footage from the Kinks, the Yardbirds, the Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers and others make this disc one easy for me to recommend. A mix of performances with an audience and without, both lip-sync and live on stage. Could've done without the Procol Harum and Hollies, but that's a small gripe. Thumbs up on this one!
