4 out of 5 stars One of the most perfect jazz voices today   February 10, 2004

I love Tierney's voice. She is certainly one of the best of today's jazz singers. I took away one star because the bass playing on this CD often overwelms Tierney and the piano, especially the piano. Hopefully on the next CD they'll take the bass down a notch or two and bring up the piano.

5 out of 5 stars Attention Amazon! (or am I just talking to a computer?)   January 22, 2004

Attention, Amazon! I think that when there are only about 12 reviews, to print 3 similar ones by the same person is irresponsible, because whether they are 5-star or 1-star (or as here, 3 separate 3-star reviews by the same person saying basically the same thing), they can seriously skew the overall ratings.

5 out of 5 stars Tierney's Most Underrated Album   January 15, 2004

This album, a tribute to the wonderful, lyrical jazz pianist, Bill Evans, has some moments on it that will grab your attention immediately. The album begins with a wonderful rendition of "Just Squeeze Me," a relatively obscure Fats Waller tune, ends with a rollicking version of the more-covered "Old Devil Moon," and in the middle, is the most original cover ever of the Tin Pan Alley classic, "You and the Night and the Music."

But those are the most immediately accessible moments. In between, are some wonderful brooding renditions of "Turn Out the Stars", "Blue in Green", and the album's highlight, "Waltz for Debby/Tiffany." The latter, I think, is Tierney's most emotional tune, and that's saying something:

Ms. Sutton is the coolest singer around, and her sidemen are sensational. Christian Jacob is a treasure, and the rhythm section of Henry and Brinker is the best since Entwhistle and Moon.

Ultimately, this album is the same experience as listening to a Bill Evans album. It's so subtle, so lyrical, so balanced, and ultimately so perfect, that you don't appreciate its beauty right away. Stay with it; you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Satchmo, Astaire, and The Beach Boys   January 11, 2004

I'm not an expert on the subject, but other than Louis Armstrong, I've never been that thrilled with jazz vocalizers, as opposed to jazz vocalists (the distinction for me is that a vocalist sings a song with jazz phrasing, while a vocalizer, or "scat singer", does that as well, but also at times uses his or her voice in the same way a musician plays his or her ax).

For instance, I admire Jon Hendricks and am, at times, even in awe of him and what he can do vocally, but he's always been a little much for me to take for very long. The same with Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Torme when they "scat", which is why I prefer to listen to Carmen MacRae, for example, or Frank Sinatra.

However, Tierney Sutton does both with equal ease, and makes it sound simple and natural and effortless, even though what she's doing is actually incredibly inventive and complex. It's an amazing achievement and reminds me in a way of Fred Astaire and, oddly enough, The Beach Boys.

Astaire made his dancing appear to be unrehearsed. And like a Louis Armstrong solo, its main components are joy and rhythm. He's so good at making it seem effortless that the long, sweaty hours in the rehearsal room never show up on the silver screen.

The same is true for The Beach Boys. Unlike the output of most rock groups of their era (including The Beatles), you can listen to Brian Wilson's music on several levels. Or at least you can try to, because sooner or later, the infectious beats and melodies make you forget how complex and carefully woven the underlying structure of the songs and arrangements are.

Sutton and her fans may not appreciate the comparison, but for me it's the highest form of praise. Her music is incredibly complex and inventive, while sounding so sweet and natural and effortless. Maybe that's because this album is a tribute to Bill Evans, whose music embodied the same qualities. I don't know. But I do know, that even if she's only accomplished that on this one CD, it's an amazing achievement. And I'm going to buy a couple more of her recordings to find out.

3 out of 5 stars decent enough   August 6, 2003

I didn't go "wow" and didn't go "ick" either. It was ok, but I won't be playing this one over and over like I will my Jane Moneheit and Diana Krall stuff.
