Coldplay Photos More from Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the Head | Parachutes | Live 2003 |
Amazon.com Things have gone ridiculously well for Coldplay since 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head. The group's global album sales have soared past the 10-million mark, putting it in the same stratosphere as megabands U2 and the Dave Matthews Band. People have offered up their bank accounts, cars, and even bodies for tickets to its shows. And, in a interesting twist, frontman Chris Martin married Gwyneth Paltrow and set the tabloid world aflame. Funny thing, then, that the British quartet's much-anticipated third album, X&Y, is all about staying grounded. In the powerful opener, "Square One," the singer insists people are fundamentally the same no matter what their stature: "You just want... Somebody listening to what you say," he sings. On "Fix You," Martin grapples with imperfection and missed opportunity: "When you love someone but it goes to waste... Could it be worse?" Meanwhile, the vibrant single, "Speed of Sound," is all about reconnecting with the spirit and soul in the face of the paparazzi's flashbulbs. Musically, the band has never sounded more adventurous, referencing everyone from Kraftwerk ("Talk") to the Pogues ("Swallowed in the Sea"), all the while sweeping aside those Radiohead-lite comparisons to embrace a massive, moving sound that makes simplicity seem sublime. --Aidin Vaziri

The Epitome of Mediocrity June 10, 2009 X&Y is pretty dang close to being THE quintessential bland music album. The production is pretty-sounding, easy on the ears and doesn't demand attention. This is the perfect background music for people who are indifferent about music.
The songwriting for the most part falls flat. The melodies seem to be trying so hard to be something great but ultimately fail to stand out. Probably the strongest melody line on here is the one they copped from Kraftwerk. Most of the songs are forgettable or downright impossible to remember, as they mostly sound very similar. Also, the album is fairly long for how little it has to offer. There are hardly twelve songs worth of musical ideas here. In short, X&Y is the epitome of mediocrity. The absoluteness of that mediocrity, (ironically) is what makes it both remarkable and despicable.
Coldplay May 4, 2009 It is a great CD, lots of good music. My wife loves it, it was a birthday present.
The Archetypical Coldplay Album April 27, 2009 What a masterpiece! Combining the sultry emotion of "Viva La Vida" the casual beauty of "Parachutes" and the melodic complexity of "A Rush of Blood to the Head," Coldplay has crafted a fluid and masterful album in the vein of U2 and even "The Beatles."
Highly recommended!
Coldplay rocks my socks April 22, 2009 Definitely one of their best albums. I am never disappointed by Coldplay, I can listen to them for hours.

I have always liked Coldplay. I had A Rush of Blood to the Head and played it to death. After watching the Grammy's and seeing that Coldplay won so much, I decided to catch up and buy X&Y and Viva La Vida. Even though radio hasn't given them much play, their music is fantastic! The use of instruments not usally heard makes their music both universal and worldly. Their rhythm, personalized vocals, harmonies and sweeping grand music makes them one of the greatest bands of the decade! I highly recommend their music.
