Product Description A great voice singing great songs recorded by a great producer. That is 'Soul', the sixth studio album from multiplatinum selling, Grammy-winning, critically acclaimed Seal. Each song is a stone-cold soul classic, from Sam Cooke's 'A Change Is Gonna Come', Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me', and Ann Pebbles' 'I Can't Stand The Rain' to Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes' 'If You Don't Know Me By Now' and Otis Redding's 'I've Been Loving You Too Long'. Produced by David Foster, 'Soul' is the perfect coming together of man, material and moment.
Amazon.com (Amazon.co.uk Review) Soul is a confusing beast. We know Seal has a great voice and can easily imagine him being covering golden oldies with aplomb. Yet this collection of soul favourites is frustratingly patchy. Opener "A Change Is Gonna Come" is impassioned and beautifully arranged (the album is helmed by David Foster of Celebrity Duets fame, who has made sure it sounds fresh and compelling), and even though it could never compare to Sam Cooke's original, it's ultimately a successful reworking. Seal applies his sandpapery tones to James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World", Al Green's ?Here I Am" and ?I'm Still in Love With You", and Ben E King's ?Stand By Me"--all of them with decent results. Decent, yet hardly overwhelming. And here's where the confusion kicks in: Why cover a bunch of songs that have already been done to death? Christmas being right around the corner is perhaps one good reason in commercial terms. But when you listen to the singer transform less well-trodden territory like Deniece Williams' ?Free" or Ann Peeble's ?I Can't Stand the Rain", it's hard not to feel this play-it-safe option--while undoubtedly a wonderful Xmas gift--is also a lost creative opportunity. --Danny McKenna

Seal-Soul July 5, 2009 Totally amazing CD. Seal took these great classics and put his own whammy on them.I reccomend this one for all to enjoy.
Seal's Soul July 4, 2009 A friend of mine was playing this album at his house and I didn't give it my undvided attention but I made sure I at least heard excerpts. The excerpts that I did hear influenced me to come home and listen to the entire album; I am delighted that I did. First of all, Seal picks some amazing classics to cover, so he is awarded cool points for that. I always enjoy hearing new renditions of old songs. I usually prefer the originals, and yes the originals outshine Seal's versions, but he definitely does a great job with these songs.
At times, Seal's voice gets too raspy for my liking, but he is a skilled vocalist. "Free" by Deneice Williams is covered on this album. Seal's version is decent, but Deneice's version is in a league all its own. It was smart play for Seal to begin his album with "A Change is Gonna Come", especially since Barack Obama was elected president the same year this album came out and his word of choice is "change." Anyway, Seal's rendition of this song is both soulful and enjoyable. "Here I Am (Come and Take Me" is a song that I had never heard before, but enjoyed it nonetheless. It's an uptempo number with good production. "People Get Ready" and "If You Don't Know Me by Now" are two songs that I have always liked, and Seal did a fine job with both tracks.
I recommend this album to those who are lovers of Seal. These are not studio-made beats, but rather live music coupled with the grandeur of Seal's vocal instrument. Invest.
Mikeisha's Top 5
1. "I'm Still in love With You" 2. "Stand By Me" 3. "People Get Ready" 4. "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" 5. "It's Alright"
Reign of Fire June 29, 2009 This cd was ok. I purchased it based on one song. I was unable to undo my 5 stars. I would really give it 3. This is a review for Reign of Fire, not Soul by Seal.

Great CD - lots of songs that will bring back alot of memories but only in a way that Seal can deliver. I think if you are a Seal fan, you will love it.
Great music, but the packaging did not appear to be original June 29, 2009 Great Music, the CD was in great condition. This item was listed as new but the shrink wrap on the case did not appear to be from the factory.
