A Horror- not a Mercy April 30, 2009 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is possibly one of the worst books I have ever read. The plot is paper thin, the characters are flat one-dimensional, non-sense voices and the ending is abysmal. I thought that I may have missed the point (as with Beloved), so a checked the audio-book from the library-just to be sure. The audio book was even worse. I am very disappointed that this book gets so much positive attention from critics and readers because I believe that this work is being judged, not from its own individual standing, but from the author's previous triumphs.
A Mercy April 29, 2009 It's such a pleasure to read an author capable of using the English language for characterization. Frequently, I did not know who the speaker was. Do not let this put you off. The theme is clear. The theme is timelessly important. The last sentences of the book are brilliant.
Another Morrison Masterpiece April 29, 2009 Toni Morrison writes yet another masterpiece! Lovers of Faulkner, Garcia Marquez, and Morrison's earlier work will not be disappointed by this latest endeavor. Her mastery of "stream of consciousness" and narrative dialogue is exceptionally executed and adds that stylistic content and metaphor that is the hallmark of a great author. The themes are timeless.
This is a must read! In my opinion, this is her best work since the incomparable "Beloved". It is befitting her stature as a Noble Laureate and is deserving of yet another Pulitzer.
  Heart-rending April 22, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A Mercy is the best thing Toni Morrison has written since Beloved. It is a small but fiercely alive portrait of four women in 17th century America and how being female and/or slaves tear their lives asunder in a country so new it is almost like another planet in its wildness. This book is better experienced than explained. As usual, Morrison's poetic prose is lush and remarkable, making A Mercy a must to read.
A Dream that Dreams Back at You April 12, 2009 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The harsh, cruel world of 17th century America is laid bare in Toni Morrison's elegiac A MERCY. With her usual mastery of roving narration and interweaving the past, present and future, Morrison paints a haunting image of our nation before it was a nation, when slavery and racism were not yet institutionalized but fear and hatred brewed wildly in an unforgiving stew.
The brilliance of the novel comes from Morrison's ability to paint the picture from so many different sets of eyes in such a constrained form--the book is a mere 167 pages long. Men, women, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, slaves, servants, Europeans, Africans, Natives...orphans...holding on desperately to the ideas of family and duty and hard-work...trying to survive in a brutal new world...all are represented here. The result is a haunting mosaic that is not so much a piece of history, but a dream of a past that was not so long ago in the grand scheme of things.
