Incomplete, but very strong May 8, 2009 I give this album four stars mainly because, relative to its older brother, "The Stage Names," "The Stand Ins" is inferior. However, it is still very good, which should reveal much about my thoughts on the previous work.
The Stand Ins seems like just a collection a good songs, which is no slam, but the songs vary in quality. The first three on the album are pure gold. The rest wander between decent and excellent. One has the sense that these songs are the reluctant castoffs from The Stage Names; not quite good enough to win out over those works, but too good to allow to die.
If you already love Okkervil River, don't hesitate to pick up this one. If you're new to the band, start with The Stage Names and come to this one afterward.
The Perfect Sequel March 22, 2009 A follow-up to "The Stage Names," "The Stand Ins" is every bit as poetic, sad, beautiful, intelligent, and, at times, funny. From the beginning, 'Lost Coastlines" sounds terrifically happy, but lyrically rings with the giddy terror of sailors in denial of losing their way. Then "Singer-Songwriter" mocks social and economic elitism, and the album continues, track after track, to deliver compelling music coupled with lyrics written in prose or near-prose, reminiscent of Tom Waits. It is these stories, told tragically and beautifully well, that weave a tapestry over the course of two albums that make them worth listening to over and over and over again.
the CD is excellent. Great music and story-telling January 29, 2009 This CD is excellent. We liked it so much that we bought additional Okkervil River CDs. The melodies are beautiful and the story-telling refreshing.
awesome! December 22, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am a bit predjudiced since my son, Brian, is the guitarist on this CD, but it's an awesome CD.
What the Hell ??? November 26, 2008 Why is this cd so good, when the Stand In's was to me, a laskluster effort?
When I heard Okkervil River was putting out a new cd I was torn because I was glad to hear that their was new material, but then I heard it was the second half of what was supposed to be a double cd, the latter half of the Stand In's. Which to me was a labored listen at best. So I was hesitant about picking up the new cd.
I was glad I did. This cd seems to be solid from begining to end. At times, admittedly the melodies are simple, but it seems to do what the songs need to do and that is flow together perfectly and deliver a well put together cd. For me it is a return to BSB and DTROGD.
So if you are hesitant about this disc on the last release, rest easy as I feel that this is a much better effort.
