Amazon.com On their 1997 release, Dude Ranch, juvenile hardcore-pop band Blink 182 tickled the funny bone with an assortment of dumb sex jokes, off-color artwork, and between-song skits, including one of a dog drinking from a freshly peed in toilet. So, two years down the road, have the band matured at all? One look at the cover of Enema of the State, which features cover art of a tarted-up blonde nurse donning a rubber glove, provides the easy answer. Fortunately, Enema supports the humor with strong musicianship. The songs are more dynamic and multitempoed than those on Dude Ranch, sounding like a cross between the Descendents and Fountains of Wayne. And unlike the glut of alt-rock releases that offer one or two memorable songs, Enema is flush with instantly memorable melodies and ear-pleasing harmonies. Good, dirty fun--no more, no less. --Jon Wiederhorn

All that punk needs to be and then some! June 16, 2009 Blink-182 is generally a love 'em or hate 'em band. If you love them, then you know how much fun they can be. If you hate them, then you're missing out on some great stuff. A lot of people may dispose the thought of listening to the band because of immature lyrics or other reasons, but honestly, there's so much to love here on "Enema of the State". The album is fast, energetic, riff-filled, funny, inspiring, melodic, and in-your-face. The guitar and bass are crisp and clear, with some awesome guitar riffs and basslines through the album. Then there's Travis Barker on the drums. Man, that drummer is just full of pure, unstoppable energy on the kit!
It would be unfair if I built up the album so much and then left off without giving some insight as to WHY it's so great, so here's a run-through of most of the songs, which are personal highlights for me:
"Dumpweed": A fast and frantic anthem about crazy girls with an awesome, pull-off guitar riff and breakneck drumming, where the verse sections and in-between sections alternate from moderately paced to quite fast-paced. "Don't Leave Me": Another speedy, short song, this one about breakup instead. A great, skillfull guitar/drum combo with Mark belting out some great vocal melodies and lyrics. "Aliens Exist": Another song that has the anthemic, energetic sounds of the Warped Tour, this one features Tom on vocals singing about aliens. Another energetic and funny song! "Going Away To College": A more serious, true-to-life song about missing a loved one as they go off to college, but more great instrumentation here. "What's My Age Again?": A punk classic with some melodic guitar lines and very funny lyrics. A mid-paced song, but with a great, clean-guitar section in the middle. "Dysentery Gary": Probably the most melodic song on the entire album, with great guitar lines, funny but jealousy-driven lyrics and awesome melody with a good pace, too. "Adam's Song": A more balladic, introspective song that shows Blink-182 discussing more serious concerns of the real world. An overall gem of a punk ballad, truly one of the band's best songs. "All The Small Things": Everybody knows this one! A steady beat, blaring guitars, funny lyrics and an infectiously catchy and memorable chorus. "The Party Song": A very fast-paced, drum-driven song with great, highly amusing lyrics and more power chords that blast their way from Tom's guitar. A song you can listen to over and over. "Anthem": More of Travis's great drumming here in this song about rebellion and the spirit of being a misfit in the modern world.
As you can tell, those are the "highlights", and yet that's most of the album right there! "Enema of the State" is an album you can listen to all the way through and love every second of it, and at only about 36 minutes, you certainly won't get bored. If you want a fast and funny punk album by one of the world's best modern punk bands, you will hopefully soon consider this one of your favorite albums, as I already do! Thanks for the time, and peace.
Sticking It To The System, or Our Classic Rock June 10, 2009 With Blink-182 making their highly anticipated reunion, it's easy to see the effect that they've had on an entire generation, which changed their musical habits forever. When most of the world was in the unfortunate grip of bad pop and hip-hop, this group of guys clearly didn't care, and did their own thing. It was simple, at times immature, but at all times fun, and the band clearly knew their audience. Unfortunately, it's in reviewing an album like this it's hard to separate the legend from the quality. Is it classic rock, or immature crap? That'd all depend on your demographic.
Highlights: Dumpweed Aliens Exist What's My Age Again? All The Small Things Anthem
For someone who grew up with this, it's classic rock at some of it's finest. It really birthed the pop-punk genre, it rocked from start to finish, the music and the lyrics were classic, and the album had a nice flow to it, so it also made for a nice overall project. It's almost revolutionary in this sense and even though I've grown up since the release of the album, the other day somebody asked me to act my age, and I said, "What's my age again?" Yeah, this album is/was pretty awesome.
From a legend point, it's pretty legendary and influential. From quality point, it clearly did something right to bring a genre to the mainstream, and rocket it on the path it followed for the rest of the decade. In fact, most of the new pop-punk bands of the past 5 years had at least some influence from Blink.
Lame then, lame now. March 10, 2009 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've seen a resurgence of Blink-182 discussions on the web over the past two years or so, with people inexplicably talking about this band in a very positive light. It all kind of makes sense when you think about it. All the little ten year olds who ate this up when it came out are now entering adulthood. This was "their" childhood band. A pity - the magical powers of nostalgia clouding the fact that Blink-182 were the worst band getting consistent play ten years ago (well, aside from Limp Bizkit). They were lame then and they're even lamer now. This band is so lame, you can't even enjoy them in the ironic sense. They make Green Day and the Offspring sound like MDC and Flipper by comparison.
People who give this thing five stars still probably have all their Pokemon cards.
They suck big balls November 20, 2008 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
I wanted travis barker to die a horrible death and blink-182 with him too. There musc sucks so much shaqs music sounds way better.
Best Blink-182 album ever! September 26, 2008 Such a good album. If you even like blink-182 a little bit you will love this CD. Classic hits such as the party song, adam's song and some really good tracks that actually made me laugh.
