5 out of 5 stars Najee Will Make You Happy   October 15, 2006
I was impressed by Najee's type of contemporary jazz since I heard his wonderful Stevie Wonder tribute to 'Songs In The Key Of Life.'Najee's Theme' is a great way to start a music career. This was recorded in 1986 and is very much steeped in the musical sound of the era-drum machines are plentiful and there are a lot of digital keyboard textures. What's impressive about 'Najee's Theme' is how it's used in conjunction with Najee's sax playing and the superb quality of the songwriting.Take the title track for example-nothing could sound more 1986 for sure but the musicians take on it is sultry;Najee switches moods from hot to cold, from smooth, easy listening jazz styled playing to a pumped up,expressive style.Another great thing about this thoroughly electric album is the heavy reliance on rhythm-this is more a contemporary funk and R&B album with a lilting cover of "Sweet Love" but of the remakes EWF's classic "Can't Hide Love" get's a powerful rendition-there of course is no way to improve on the peerless original but Najee plays by and large expressively on this track, only for a moment playing melodically but generally streching out into the territory Don Myrick did on the original."Feel So Good To Me","Betcha Don't Know","Mysterious" and the ear catching "We're Still Family" all have a great uptempo funk rhythm going for them, plus some unusually haunting backround vocals."For The Love Of You" and "What You Do To Me" take on a more relaxed, sensual tone but the feeling is all the same.So if you enjoy the music that people such as Loose Ends,Ronnie Laws,Sade and the SOS Band were making around this very same time you will eat 'Najee's Theme' right up.It is one of those albums that's just as suitable for a nightime drive without a care in a world or an intimate moment in the bedroom-this goes good anywhere. And even if you just want to groove a little this will fit the bill.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!   May 14, 2005

This is one of those CDs in which I actually find it difficult to decide which of the songs I like the best. I didn't know who Najee was until my dad gave me this cassette tape for my 13th birthday in June 1988, but when I got this album, I couldn't stop listening to it. Now I have the CD and when I play this album in my car on my Discman, I can set it at random and still not go wrong because without exception, EVERY song is fantastic. All the albums he's done range from decent to very good, but Najee's Theme is the bomb!!! Definitely 5 stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut!!   April 10, 2004

Najee takes R&B classics, original songs, puts them together and makes this a wonderful debut. I love "Najee's Theme", "Betcha Don't Know" and his version of the Eath Wind and Fire classic, "Can't Hide Love". This is a "must have" in your Smooth Jazz collection!

This is a very beyond most fascinating CD that I have ever heard. I love old school contemporary jazz from the 60's, 70's, and 80's onto today. Hey if you love Najee then this is the CD that is recommended for you.

From the first time I heard Najee's Theme,I knew he was a great musician. He has never disappointed me. Everything he has done up to date has been a wonderful experience. He tells a story with his music. This album is a sampling of all his greatest work. It will assure you whenever he puts out new music not to hesistate to buy.
